Wednesday, St John Paul II
SYNOD OF BISHOPS: SUMMARY OF INITIAL DISCUSSIONS
During the prayer vigil held in St Peter’s Square on 4 October 2014 in preparation for the Synod on the family, Pope Francis evoked the centrality of the experience of family in all lives, in a simple and concrete manner:
“Evening falls on our assembly. It is the hour at which one willingly returns home to meet at the same table, in the depth of affection, of the good that has been done and received, of the encounters which warm the heart and make it grow, good wine which hastens the unending feast in the days of man. It is also the weightiest hour for one who finds himself face to face with his own loneliness, in the bitter twilight of shattered dreams and broken plans; how many people trudge through the day in the blind alley of resignation, of abandonment, even resentment: in how many homes the wine of joy has been less plentiful, and therefore, also the zest — the very wisdom — for life […]. Let us make our prayer heard for one another this evening, a prayer for all”.
Please keep up to date and well informed through the bulletin and across the web site about all matters which concern us in and about the Parish .

THE “SIGN OF PEACE” AT MASS
The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments (which oversees liturgical practices of the Church) has recommended keeping the Sign of Peace in its present form and place in the Mass:
“It is our hope that this may become an occasion for a new and more intense Eucharistic catechesis between the priests and the communities, in order to help the people of God to grow in a more profound understanding of this important moment of the celebration, that is clearly oriented to communicate the sentiments and the attitudes of Christ, the Prince of Peace, the Risen One, Giver of Peace for the Church and for the world, and that, through the Sacramental Communion with his Body and his Blood, makes us become one with Him and in Him.”
HOWEVER “…during the Synod of Bishops there was discussion about the appropriateness of greater restraint in this gesture, which can be exaggerated and cause a certain distraction in the assembly just before the reception of Communion.
It should be kept in mind that nothing is lost when the sign of peace is marked by a sobriety which preserves the proper spirit of the celebration, as, for example, when it is restricted to one’s immediate neighbours.”

PRAYING THE ROSARY
Fr. Denis McBride, the Scottish Redemptorist priest has published a new book entitled “Praying the Rosary” in the form of a journey through scripture and art.
In it he writes:
”Meditating on the Rosary we are invited to look and listen, then look again. We are encouraged not only to say the prayers but to go beyond recital and enter the beauty and the complexity of the drama. It presupposes that what is remembered is not lost in history but is an abiding force that continues to give meaning to what is happening now in our lives. We connect what is happening in our lives to the lives of Jesus and Mary.”
The book is available for purchase or for order at the Stall.
